Mouflon Chess Challenge April 2020: Michaelides through to the Finals
Konstantinos Michaelides is the first player to qualify for the Mouflon Chess Challenge April 2020 Final. Konstantinos Michaelides won against Konstantinos Papatryfonos 5,5-4,5 in yesterday’s Semi-Final Match. After a 3-3 draw in the 5+3 section, and after 3 games the players were tied 1,5-1,5, Konstantinos won the last game and thus won the match with the smallest of margins without needing the Armageddon.
Game 1: Konstantinos Michaelides 1/2-1/2 Konstantinos Papatryfonos
In the first game Konstantinos Michaelides went for the Open Catalan. Konstantinos Papatryfonos equalized quite early on, with the game staying equal right to the endgame where the players repeated moves. Quite a solid display and accurate play from both players.
Game 2: Konstantinos Michaelides 1/2-1/2 Konstantinos Papatryfonos
Another solid and accurate game by both players. Konstantinos Papatryfonos chose his pet 2. Bf4 against 1.d4 d5. The game was equal for the most part with both players repeating moves on move 30.
Game 3: Konstantinos Michaelides 0-1 Konstantinos Papatryfonos
In the third game Konstantinos Michaelides went again for the Open Catalan. This time a mouse slip occured on the 10th move which cost Konstantinos Michaelides a whole piece and eventually the game.
Game 4: Konstantinos Papatryfonos 0-1 Konstantinos Michaelides
Konstantinos Papatryfonos went again for 1.d4 d5 2.Bf4 which went well until his 18th move 18. c4 which gave Black the initiative. After 22. … Qc6?! Konstantinos Papatryfonos equalized with 23.d5! but failed to follow up with the correct 24.d6 which left him in a worse position which he followed up by the blunder 25.Qd4??. Konstantinos Michaelides wrapped up the game in 37 moves.
Game 5: Konstantinos Michaelides 0-1 Konstantinos Papatryfonos
The fifth game saw the English Opening being played. After 14. Rd1?! Konstantinos Papatryfonos gained the upperhand with 14. … d4! Konstantinos Michaelides missed 32. Qb2!! which would have turned the tables around. Otherwise a very nice attacking game played by Konstantinos Papatryfonos.
Game 6: Konstantinos Papatryfonos 0-1 Konstantinos Michaelides
Konstantinos Michaelides requiring to win the last game to stay in the match did not disappoint. Right from the beginning Konstantinos Michaelides went on the attack. After 18. … f6?! Konstantinos Papatryfonos missed the best reply and ended in an inferior position. After long manoeuvres Konstantinos Papatryfonos made small inaccuracies which eventually cost him the game.

Game 7: Konstantinos Michaelides 1-0 Konstantinos Papatryfonos
For the first time in the match Konstantinos Michaelides takes the lead with 4 to 3. The game was equal until 37. … g5? which gave Konstantinos Michaelides an advantage which he converted into a full point.
Game 8: Konstantinos Papatryfonos 1-0 Konstantinos Michaelides
Konstantinos Papatryfonos equalizes the match at 4-4 with a victory in the eighth game. The game was equal until Michaelides’ mistake with 38. … Rh8? which Papatryfonos punished with superb endgame technique.
Game 9: Konstantinos Michaelides 1/2-1/2 Konstantinos Papatryfonos
A missed opportunity for Konstantinos Papatryfonos as he misses … Qb5+ securing victory. The game slipped out of Konstantinos Michaelides’ hands after 28. g4?! after which Konstantinos Papatryfonos played quite accurately until the queen endgame in which he missed two winning opportunities and ended up having to be happy with a draw.

Konstantinos Michaelides wins last game and avoids Armageddon match. This game was a real rollercoaster as the advantage kept shifting between the two players.
