Cyprus No.2 Alexandros Isaakidis is the second player to qualify for the Mouflon Chess Challenge April 2020 Semi-Final. Alexandros Isaakidis won against Fivos Kourouyiannis 6-0 in yesterday’s Quarter-Final Match. Alexandros Isaakidis dominated the match, as he secured match victory with two games to spare. On the other hand, Fivos Kourouyiannis missed quite a few winning opportunities.

Game 1: Alexandros Isaakidis 1-0 Fivos Kourouyiannis

In the first game we got to see a Sicilian Richter-Rauzer in which Fivos Kourouyiannis equalized with his … d4 break. Alexandros Isaakidis sacrificed a piece which was unsound but Fivos Kourouyiannis did not manage to refute it.

Game 2: Fivos Kourouyiannis 0-1 Alexandros Isaakidis

The English Symmetrical Opening was played in the second game. Here we saw a major positional mistake from Fivos Kourouyiannis as his dark-squared bishop was stuck and had nowhere to go which Alexandros Isaakidis took full advantage of and won comfortably.

Game 3: Alexandros Isaakidis 1-0 Fivos Kourouyiannis

The shortest game of the match was played in the third game. Alexandros Isaakidis came out of the opening with a winning advantage which could have been refuted but again Fivos Kourouyiannis missed the opportunity to win the game and blundered the game away with his last move.

Game 4: Fivos Kourouyiannis 0-1 Alexandros Isaakidis

Again an English Opening on the board in game 4. Alexandros Isaakidis starts going on the attack and Fivos Kourouyiannis starts defending well and then again falters in the crucial points. With his fourth victory Alexandros Isaakidis secured match victory.

Game 5: Alexandros Isaakidis 1-0 Fivos Kourouyiannis

Queen’s Gambit Declined: Semi-Tarrasch was the opening for the fifth game. Alexandros Isaakidis came out of the opening with an advantage. As Alexandros Isaakidis delayed playing the d5 pawn push Fivos Kourouyiannis equalized. Alexandros went for the rook lift and started attacking with his rook, queen, and knight. Fivos in time trouble missed the amazing defensive h5 pawn sacrifice solution, and instead sacrificed the exchange and lost.

Game 6: Fivos Kourouyiannis 0-1 Alexandros Isaakidis

The last game saw a Grunfeld Defence on the board where the game was equal until Fivos Kourouyiannis blundered on his 18th move and thus resigned after his 19th move to give Alexandros Isaakidis a clean 6-0 victory.
